A message from our Executive Director

Kelly Legge

In 2016, I was a member of Up and Running Guelph’s founding group—assuming the role of Program Manager and Lead Coach—and have since had the privilege of introducing hundreds of new participants and volunteers to our programs. I have not only personally benefited from the powerful combination of green exercise and social connections, but I have witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact our programs have had. With experiences of declining mental health, burnout, and loneliness rising in our community and beyond, Up and Running Guelph’s programs will continue to play an important role in helping to address the mental health crisis we are facing.

My journey leading to Up and Running Guelph was a long and twisty one, with plenty of bumps along the way—and today, I can confidently say, I wouldn’t change a thing. Following a car accident in 2007 that abruptly put an end to the career path I was on, I found myself in a place of despair and uncertainty. Fortunately, I had an incredible network of support to guide me through one of the most difficult times in my life. Looking back, the catalyst for change was the moment I started focusing on improving my quality of life versus returning to ‘normal’.

In 2009, I signed up for my first running clinic and began working on setting goals with the support of clinic leaders and fellow runners—I went from running 5km to signing up for my first half marathon! Every step forward left me with a sense of pride and accomplishment. With a renewed sense of purpose, in 2011, I added mountain biking to the mix and embraced a new sport: adventure racing. While I continued to adapt to living with symptoms of post-concussion syndrome, I had quickly discovered that the combination of getting outside with others and exercising had dramatically improved my quality of life. It was this realization that inspired me to share my story and help empower others.

At Up and Running Guelph, we recognize that managing mental health and wellbeing is a lifelong journey that looks different for everyone. Through our inclusive, nature-based walking and running programs, we join participants in taking steps out the door as they move towards adding green exercise to their daily routine. In my new role as Executive Director, I will continue to support others on their journey through the delivery of Up and Running Guelph’s mission. Together, we will take the necessary steps to promote improved mental health and wellbeing through green exercise in our community, and beyond.
